Chapter 5: Using Information Effectively

What does it mean to use information effectively? Well, ask yourself, what is my purpose for doing this research? Depending on your assignment, it may be to argue a particular position, to analyze a creative work, compare and contrast different ideas, etc. In order to reach your goal successfully, you will need to incorporate the results of your research in an organized, ethical way, and to synthesize (or combine) your sources by weaving them together within your paper, speech, or other research product, in a way that best meets your specific purpose.

In this chapter, you'll learn to:

  • Practice proper citation and attribution.
  • Synthesize ideas gathered from multiple sources.
