About Your Instructor: Dr. Whitney Tholen

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Name: Whitney Tholen, PhD

Mini Biography: I was born and raised in Texas. I obtained my PhD in 2014 from University of Texas of Arlington. My graduate work focused on the pathology of the soft coral, Gorgonia ventalina Links to an external site.. My principle findings discovered several adverse impacts that rising ocean temperatures can have on both the coral's immune system as well as increase in virulence of pathogens. After graduation, I spent several years working for a large pharmaceutical company as a senior microbiologist. My main research focused on the discovery of novel antibiotics & disinfectants Links to an external site. for ocular and otic applications. In 2018, I returned to UTA to pursue a career in academia teaching undergraduate microbiology and continue researching marine diseases. My research now takes a more "micro" sized approach. Most of my research activities involve assessing factors that affect or disrupt biofilm formation in various marine pathogens, such as Vibrio coralliilyticus Links to an external site..
