COMS 4315: Business Presentations
Welcome!
Many of you may be expecting that this will be a speech class. Well, yes, it most certainly is. However, it is SO MUCH MORE than that! The focus of this course is to enhance your professional presentation, planning, problem solving, and writing skills.
Fair warning...this is a senior-level course and is facilitated accordingly. In other words, my content/teaching/assignments/expectations are set high. The expectations will not drop, as doing so is absolutely disrespectful to YOU.
Be prepared to execute at the highest level. My goal for the class is that everyone leaves the course with confidence that they can perform in a variety of professional circumstances- and excel.
~Carie Kapellusch
Getting All You Can out of the Course
The following will provide you with tips on doing well in this course and hopefully any course – online or face to face. It’s best to be in a distraction-free environment and it would be helpful if you made decisions now about where that place is located, so that you can return there during the semester when you are reading, listening to podcasts or recording/preparing assignments.
I want you to do well in this class. I love my teaching career and I’m excited about at least attempting to be back in the classroom. For that to happen successfully we have to all DO OUR PART!
Ok – ready...
- Read all course materials closely and carefully and do all assignments/activities in a timely way.
- Don’t skim readings and don’t wait until the last minute.
- I think sometimes we don’t put enough emphasis on those basic things. If you make those a priority, it will simplify your semester tremendously. I promise.
- All assignments in the course have been carefully and thoughtfully designed for you to deepen your own understanding about the subject area and allow you to apply this knowledge outside our university walls.
- You will have readings from a variety of sources including your textbooks (which is provided FREE), linked digital articles, presentation examples, TedTalks, etc.
- Don’t be tempted to skim or fast-forward through these materials as they prepare you to do well on assignments and tests and will deepen your understanding.
- During the semester, you will gain knowledge from your readings and you will also receive crucial feedback on your work from myself and peers. It is very important that you are able to not only provide critique, but accept it as well.
- If you have any questions on assignments, please contact me so I can explain further.
- Remember, I’m here for you – AND you are also welcome to connect with me individually in my office, via email, or Microsoft Teams.
- I'd like for you to consider your own learning goals for this course. Start to see yourself as a professional and think about how your current learning will prepare you for your future.
